Build-Your-Own Internship

The Applications for the 2024 Build-Your-Own Internship are now closed, please return to our website next spring for opportunities next year.

The Center for Measurement Justice (CMJ) offers an internship opportunity that provides Black, Brown, or Indigenous PhD students studying in the field of educational assessment and/or measurement a one-time stipend of up to $10,000 (depending on scope of the project) to conduct a research project of their choice. Projects must be in alignment with justice-oriented educational measurement. Selected interns will be paired with an expert in the field to advise them through the internship. The project can range from 4 – 10 weeks during the summer months.

The process for applying for the Build-Your-Own Internship is outlined below.

APPLY

To apply for the program, interested students must complete an application form on the CMJ website by March 30th, 2024. The application should include a (300-500 word) description of the proposed research project, a curriculum vitae, and a graduate school transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable). All application materials should be uploaded to the application form as one document.

PLACEMENT

All applications will be reviewed by CMJ staff. Decisions will be made based on feasibility, alignment with CMJ’s mission, and the availability of an appropriate mentor to guide the research project. Students will be notified by CMJ staff no later than May 1, 2024. The students and mentors must sign the Internship Agreement before the student’s start date. During the program, students are required to submit a midpoint report to CMJ using a Google form, as well as a summary report of their research project at the end of the program before receiving their second installment of the grant.

PAYMENT & PROGRAM COMPLETION

The first half of the payment will be issued at the start of the internship, and the second will be issued after the successful completion of the program. Students are required to write a summary of tasks performed, have it signed by their mentor, and submit it to CMJ prior to the final payment being made. While not required, award recipients are encouraged to share their insights as a feature on CMJ’s website.
